Gum Disease / Periodontal Treatment

Healthy Gums, Healthier Smile — and a Healthier You
Gum disease (periodontal disease) is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the United States — and most people don't know they have it until it's advanced. At Dentistry 2000 in Oceanside, Dr. A.R. Assadian and our dental team provide comprehensive periodontal evaluations and personalized treatment plans focused on controlling infection, preserving bone, and keeping your teeth for life.
Periodontal disease is inflammation and infection of the gums and the supporting bone around your teeth. It progresses in two stages: Gingivitis (early gum inflammation, reversible with treatment) and Periodontitis (advanced disease with bone loss — controllable but not reversible).
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Bleeding during brushing or flossing
- Receding gums — teeth appear longer than before
- Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
- Loose or shifting teeth; changes in your bite
- Pus between teeth and gums
⚠️ IMPORTANT
Gums can appear normal even when disease-causing bacteria are present below the gumline. Early professional evaluation is essential — do not wait for visible symptoms.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Common signs include bleeding gums, swelling, tenderness, gum recession, bad breath, loose teeth, or changes in your bite. Gum disease can also be present without obvious symptoms.
What is scaling and root planing?
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning that removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria below the gumline and smooths root surfaces so the gums can heal and stabilize.
Can gum disease be reversed?
Gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, can often be reversed with professional care and improved home care. Periodontitis with bone loss cannot be fully reversed, but it can often be controlled with treatment and maintenance.
"Treating gum disease is about restoring stability — controlling bacteria, protecting bone, and helping patients keep their teeth for life. With precise diagnosis and consistent maintenance, we see excellent long-term results."
— Dr. A.R. Assadian, DDS — Dentistry 2000
Why do I need periodontal maintenance after treatment?
Periodontal maintenance helps prevent disease relapse by cleaning deeper areas where bacteria can return. Many patients need maintenance visits every three to four months after active therapy.
Is gum disease treatment covered by insurance?
Many Insurance dental plans offer coverage for periodontal evaluation, scaling and root planing, and maintenance visits. Our team can help review your benefits and treatment estimate.
